Ever wondered how some painters seem to be able to find a beautiful subject anywhere they go, even on a grey day on a building site? Taking a playful approach to any subject will enable us to create a personal, individual painting that expresses what we found to inspire us. Pausing to reflect on what attracts us to a scene and figuring out how to accentuate a particular aspect of our subject will encourage us to make more characterful paintings. The painting process is way more fun and playful when we are free to step away from always trying to ‘get it right’. The goal here is to move beyond simply documenting the scene before us, into a place where we can capture and communicate a personal response to any scene. Join me for a day of enjoyable exploration as we learn to fall in love with any location and figure out how to find the fun in everything!
Please just bring your usual plein air painting kit, it’s best to stick to your familiar favourite materials and equipment for this workshop. Ideally, use a set-up that leaves your hands free. Bring painting panels or canvases in any size that you’re comfortable with, if you’re a fast worker you may want to bring 3 or more, if you prefer to take your time then 2 will suffice. Your usual palette of colours will be fine, make sure you have plenty of paint and a good selection of larger and smaller brushes. This workshop is all about taking a more relaxed and playful approach and we want to extend that mindset to our equipment too – the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your set-up and that your surface, colours and brushes are familiar to you.
You will definitely require a sketchbook and pencil for planning images and making notes.
Please remember to pack a hat with a wide brim.

Large paint book from edge pro gear on a K&F concept TM2324 tripod
Plastic drumstick holder clamp for a brush holder
Raymar panel carriers in 12x16 and 11x14” sizes
Rosemary and Co Ultimate Chunking brushes, mostly flats between size 10 and 1, a couple of eclipse long filberts, sizes 2 and 4 and a small size 3 Kolinsky sable round. I may also use round, egbert or filbert Ultimate brushes on occasion.
Belle Arti 007 oil primed fine grain linen glued onto Gator board panels in 9x12, 11x14 and 12x16”
Michael Harding Oil Colours in Titanium White #2, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Indian Yellow Red Shade, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Claret, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo/Cerulean blue, Cobalt violet dark, Transparent Oxide Yellow, Genuine Viridian (not phthalo green!) Lead tin yellow lemon, Cobalt blue.
Homemade painting medium of 3 parts Genuine Gum Turpentine (MH Portuguese maritime turpentine or similar) to 1 part Linseed stand oil.
Plenty of paper towel or rag.
